I recently got an sms  from one of ma mates:

"Send your nic number to 42201xxxxxxxx without dashes to '668' and find out how many sims you have from Ufone, Warid, Mobilink, Telenor, SCO and Zong"

SCO is Special Communication Organization; GM network in Azad Jammu Kashmir and Northern Areas.

Ok; now I came accross a new wbsite which will help you to fulfil the same task by going there. Here is what you have to do:

Simply write the full National Identity Card number after the = sign and you will know; how many sims are registered via your CNIC.

I think this is pretty amazing service, usually when you deal with franchise they use your NIC to issue x amount of sims. This service will help you to get the real picture and will save you from any unforeseen accident. After all it is a risk where police can arrest you; if sim that was issued on your CNIC is being used for FRAUD / Bad purpose.

PTCL would be shifting to 8 Digits from 7 Digits

Since some time now, it was being heard that PTCL woudl be shifting land line from 7 Digits to 8 digits to increase the pool of numbers available. Earlier in April and March they did the testing on some of the exhcnages in Karachi by adding '3' before the actual number and after the area code like '02134111111'. This is official now where Media and News Paper confirmed it. is now confirmed as reported by different media channels and news papers. Link for one of the news paper Business Recorder follows.

Pakistan Telecommunication Company Ltd (PTCL) would shift its fixed line numbering plan from 7 to 8 digit series as per the instructions of Pakistan Telecommunication Authority. Initially migration from 7 series to 8 digit series would take place in Lahore and Karachi.

As per details, Digit “3″ will be added in all existing 7 digits numbers of Karachi and Lahore except the numbers starting from “9″. Digit “9″ will be added in all existing numbers starting from “9″. An important point to remember is the numbers are being added to existing numbers not area codes, with the exemption of army exchanges, which would remain same.

For the customer’s awareness and facilitation, the new series plan will run parallel to old one for a period of three months w.e.f. July 1, 2009 till September 30, 2009. The period from October 1, 2009 till December 30, 2009 will be covered by announcements which would be made in order to facilitate subscribers/ customers.

PTA chief hints tax cut for telecoms

PTA has suggested the FBR to slash the taxes imposed on telecom sector from 21 per cent to 16 per cent.
ISLAMABAD: Telecom industry would hear a 'good news' in the upcoming budget as the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has recommended the federal government to curb tax ratio on the telecom sector to bring the sector at par with other sectors.
These views were expressed by Dr Muhammad Yaseen, Chairman PTA, while sharing views with media here at a local hotel after a telecom seminar held in connection with the World Telecom Day. He said heavy taxation had adversely affected the telecom growth, seeing which PTA has suggested the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to slash the taxes imposed on telecom sector from 21 per cent to 16 per cent.
When asked whether the management of Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) had informed about their step to reduce the timeline for broadband dialup, the PTA chairman said there was no decrease and if the media had any evidence, it should submit it to him and he would look into the matter.
The chairman said PTA had introduced so many steps to help grow the telecom sector and these were being hailed by the nations across the globe. "However, due to joint efforts, the fourth quarter saw a positive growth, making the annual growth positive," he added. "We have introduced mobile banking and now working on mobile agriculture and other new initiatives," he said, adding that the companies should also opt for 'out-of-box' solutions to enhance telecom growth. "There are countries with more than 100 per cent teledensity and we would have to search for new opportunities to take the telecom sector ahead," he added. Urging the telecom sector to focus on broadband services, Dr Yaseen said PTA had developed broadband group and three companies including Wateen and Mobilink were set to launch Wimax solutions for the consumers. While speaking at Nokia Siemens Networks Industry seminar as the chief guest, the Chairman PTA said to achieve cost efficiency in the operations, there is a pressing need of enhanced collaboration and partnership among all telecom companies. "By sharing infrastructure, companies can save cost and yet maintain quality. PTA is pursuing mobile operators for sharing infrastructure to reduce BTS towers and other sites so that costs of business can be tamed down," said the PTA Chief.
He emphasised on the importance of broadband proliferation to achieve goal of setting up `Information Society'. He said that massive awareness campaign is needed to be launched to improve broadband growth besides developing contents in local languages and applications.
Dr Yaseen said PTA has made coordinated efforts to facilitate broadband growth by forming a "Broadband Stakeholders Group" and other measures. He also told about PTA negotiations with State Bank to introduce Mobile Banking Services.
He said that three operators are in the process of launching mobile broadband services. Two operators have launched E-video services. All these innovative services will help provisioning of better information services to consumers and will bring increased revenues for the industry.
On this occasion, CEO USF Parvaiz Iftikhar, Salman Ansari, Saad Warraich, Country Director Nokia Siemens Networks and others also shared their views.

PTA Terminates License of Instaphone

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has, with immediate effect, terminated the license of M/S Pakcom (Instaphone) on account of Company’s failure to pay its outstanding dues. The payable amount would be recovered under Section 30 of the Pakistan Telecommunication (Re-organization) Act. The Authority has issued a detailed determination in this regard.

According to details, M/S Pakcom’s license was renewed on April 19, 2005 for another term of 15 years against the price of US$ 291 Million payable in installments as per the license conditions. The licensee failed to follow the payment schedule provided in its renewed license. The licensee, through its representative from time to time, requested the Authority to allow time to make the outstanding payments. Inspite of every concession, to the licensee, in terms of time and its persistent failure to make the payments, action, including show-cause, was initiated as per Section 23 of the Act, which was neither satisfactorily replied nor outstanding dues paid.

In the final hearing on November 29, 2007 the representative of M/S Instaphone requested for further time to make the payments but without any cogent evidence or specific date for the same. The Authority’s considered opinion is that the licensee’s contravention of the terms and conditions of the license regarding its financial obligations is grave and persistent, resulting in the termination of its license. PTA has also directed Frequency Allocation Board to immediately withdraw its frequency spectrum assigned to M/S Instaphone.
